Andreas:

Well Unfortunately I have class all day Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-3:30.  Monday, Wednesday, or Friday works the best for lunch time for me.  We can push it out a little later if that works better for you.

I have been thinking up a couple ideas for a topic.  Each one I could probably talk for hours on.  I’ve been interested in
Trends and influences from music and culture on design.  Another topic could be branding- how do you maintain authenticity to your design philosophy.  Though we could start off easy with a easier topic such as how you adapt as a designer coming from school.

Thanks,

Sounds great to me. Let me brainstorm on a topic and I’ll get back with you. How does mid to late next week look for you?

Thanks Jeff.

I’d prefer more structure if alright with you.

What do you think of a 3month term to start.
We meet in person 1time per month over coffee or lunch (1hr or so) - total of 3 highpowered/constructive visits.
If we cannot meet in person, then we can have a telephone call.
Each time, we could address a specific topic - you decide what we discuss - you would let me know several days in advance of the topic.

Workable?

I propose this in the interest of giving you potent insight and constructive feedback, and keeping our agenda’s neat (I travel internationally so pre-planning and structure is important).
I prefer the phone over email, and being direct is refreshing. So far, I can appreciate your go-get-em attitude and look forward to your reply.

Cheers,

Andreas:

Thank you for your prompt reply. I’ll try to keep this short:

1. Design has always attracted me even a young age, from studying the expressions on cars to building model airplanes. When I got older I moved on to rebuilding and modifying my car: a Tom Tjaarda designed Fiat Spider. My undergraduate degree was in marketing and worked for several years in software and technology. While in marketing, it really frustrated me that certain products. They didn’t fit the needs of the consumer, or were designed by engineer who just bandaided the product or didn’t know about interaction. I really enjoy research, development, and conceptualizing. Design is the one thing I am very passionate about and want make a difference in the sustained satisfaction people get from a product.

2. My intension is to work in Design management so getting a “day in the life” would help me tremendously. II also hope to balance education that focuses on academia with a professional perspective. Hearing other design philosophies and personal processes would be very helpful in refining my technique. I intend on sending you products and inspiration and get your take on it.

3. I have been very interested in the innovative projects Philips Design is working on and looked you up on Linkedin. I hope you don’t mind but I took the liberty of scanning through your
del.icio.us account posted on Linkedin. There are lots of similarities in our interests from films, music, history, travel etc. In addition, you seem very insightful in your comments.

On that note, I hope my answers were up to par. Let me know if you are interested in entertaining the idea.

Thanks,

Jeff McCloud

Hi Jeff,

First, thanks for reaching out.

Second, I’d like to know a few things about your request, specifically to judge if this will be rewarding (for you and for me).

Please answer a few questions…
1. Why Design?
2. What do you hope to get from a mentorship?
3. Why me?
