Karim and Philips
Today was a wonderful day for design. Not only did I get a chance to tour Philips design studio, I got a chance to see Karim Rashid speak at the Wooddruff center. This also sparked my idea for a thesis topic. I have some of my bulletpoint notes….
Karim Rashid spoke about anumber of interesting topcs:
color- every color comes from nature- 16,000 colors that we can see. Why now do all cities grey and look like dirt in color
I’m thinking if classical architecture was originally painted a color but since time has passed and all that is left is the white color, how did that influence our modern design.
He never made his own models- paid other to make them…

Thesis
history in design - color, form, function-
skills are lost in time due to it becoming outdated-but they will come in handy later in history- metal working ->nanotech
How can you look back in history to get inspiration for modern design - ancient history. Mechanical computers driving modern design. Form study - what worked then could work now. Ancient cities used to be colorful but are now stone colored. We see them as run down and unfunished, we should be inspired by what they once were not how they are now.
